Recovering Yuvraj Makes India ICC WT20 Favourites

Recovering Yuvraj Makes India ICC WT20 Favourites

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh has targeted the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September as a possible comeback following his recovery from cancer.

Yuvraj was diagnosed with lung cancer after he helped India win the 2011 World Cup but after undergoing chemotherapy in America, is slowly making a return to full fitness.

Speaking to ICC Cricket 360°™, he talked about his illness, how he has coped with it and his hopes for the future.

"Initially it was hard to accept that a guy like me who is training six to seven hours a day, running around all the time as an athlete, can get diagnosed with something like this," he said.

"It took a long time to sink in but eventually I made peace with it. I knew I have an issue and I have to sort it out.

"The support was overwhelming, especially from India. One of the students from a college in Indianapolis came to see me and I felt like I was in India. I just want to thank everybody for their support and for their care. I went through chemotherapy which is hard for everybody but the wishes and the love is what made me come back," he added.

He has now started light training with a view to returning to playing cricket in the near future.

"I’m feeling good. It’s been two months since I finished my chemotherapy. Initially my energy levels were low but now I am following my diet and eating loads of food and it’s getting better in recovery. I’ve done six or seven sessions very light training and very light yoga. I’m just getting back into the groove of being a normal person, breathe normally, which is a lot of excitement and fun for me at the moment."

Yuvraj, who is one of India's most powerful batsman, has played 37 Tests, 271 One-Day Internationals and 23 Twenty20 Internationals for his country and is the only man to have scored six sixes in a Twenty20 over, achieving the feat against Stuart Broad in the 2007 event - which India went on to win.

Disappointing showings followed for India in 2009 and 2010 but he is hopeful of two things ahead of the 2012 event - that he will be fit enough to play, and that India will run out winners.

"I don’t want to rush and I don’t want to come back at 75% fitness. I might take six months, I might take two months. So I don’t know. But the day I feel 100% I surely will be back," he said.

“Playing for India is going to be a huge challenge for me because the body has been under a lot of shock which nobody can understand except me. Only a cancer patient can understand what he is going through. So it’s going to be a big challenge for me to come back and play for India again."

"I think (the) favourites are India because we’ve got the biggest hitters - biggest hitters in town that’s what I want to say. Hopefully I should be back by then. I’m not saying I’m the reason, it’s just that I feel we have the strongest side and if we can sort out our bowling out in T20 I’m sure we can be a strong unit. There are other strong teams like Australia, South Africa which always compete at the top level at world events."

Malinga Chosen As ICC WT20 2012 Ambassador

Malinga Chosen As ICC WT20 2012 Ambassador

Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been chosen as the official event ambassador for the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 event by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The fourth edition of the tournament will be hosted in Sri Lanka between 18th September and 7th October.

Malinga has been selected in recognition of his skills as a role model both on and off the field. His unorthodox bowling action has endeared himself to supporters and brought him 40 T20I wickets and 155 wickets in all Twenty20 cricket.

"It is wonderful to have Lasith Malinga as the tournament ambassador for the ICC World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka," ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said.

"Lasith is a special player and one of the most recognisable cricketers in the world. Whenever he runs in to bowl with his distinctive action there is a thrill in the game.

"I am sure he will add to the buzz that has already surfaced and crowds will flock to see players like Lasith represent their country in the ICC World Twenty20."

Malinga added: "I am honoured to play a part in the first ICC World Twenty20 tournament to be hosted in Asia."

"As an ambassador, I hope to take the T20 message to all communities and passionate fans across the world. I sincerely thank the ICC for giving Sri Lanka the opportunity to host an event of this magnitude and I invite all cricket fans to show their support and unite in the spirit of the game.”

West Indies The Team To Beat - Shane Watson

West Indies The Team To Beat - Shane Watson

Australia all-rounder and vice-captain Shane Watson believes that the West Indies will be among the teams to beat at the ICC World Twenty20 later this year.

The West Indies reached the semi-finals in 2009 and failed to progress from the second group stage when they hosted the competition in 2010 but Watson expects them to be in the reckoning in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to ICC 360, he said: "I actually think the West Indies are going to be the team to beat. They have got a really well balanced team that has played a lot of high quality Twenty20 cricket around the world and they certainly know how to perform under pressure. I think they have got the firepower to give a lot of teams a big surprise."

Australia finished as runners-up to England in the Caribbean but Watson believes that his team are capable of going one better.

"It's a format in which we still haven't been able to play well consistently against other countries in the world. We made the final in the last ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies and in the end we were pipped by England but since then we haven’t played consistently well, so we are really going to have to step up our Twenty20 game. With a change in players and the experience of playing in different Twenty20 leagues, it means hopefully we can step up when we really need to."

Prior to that, Australia play a series of five One-Day Internationals against England and Watson is looking forward to the challenge.

"It is going to be a huge series. It is a great lead-in to next year’s Ashes and there is no doubt we have to be at our absolute best for that one-day series so our preparation is going to be very important, as is the way we perform. It is the first time for us with a slightly newer group of cricketers, a new coach Mickey Arthur and a new structure around us," he said.

Vettori Makes Himself Available For ICC World Twenty20

Vettori Makes Himself Available For ICC World Twenty20

Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has made himself available for the ICC World Twenty20 2012, which gets underway in Sri Lanka in September.

Vettori had previously announced he was taking a break from limited overs cricket but the lure of another global tournament has proved hard to resist.

New Zealand take on Bangladesh and Pakistan in their group and will name a provisional squad on 18th July.

"Dan was the number one ranked Twenty20 bowler in 2009 and is widely regarded as one of the best Twenty20 exponents in world cricket," New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Chief Exexcutive David White said.

"His availability is a real boost for the BLACKCAPS with his style of bowling well suited to conditions in Sri Lanka."

Vettori has played 28 T20 Internationals for his country, taking 35 wickets and bowling with an economy rate of 5.36. He has played two of those games in Sri Lanka, taking two wickets with an economy rate of 5.42.

National Selection Manager Kim Littlejohn added: "Twenty20 is a format Dan enjoys and the opportunity to be part of a team which competes at a world event is enticing for him.

"He has been encouraged by his team mates, coaching staff and others at NZC and we are thrilled to have him in the mix.  He will offer a lot to the side."

ICC World Twenty20 2012 Tickets Launched In Colombo

ICC World Twenty20 2012 Tickets Launched In Colombo

ICC Chief executive Haroon Lorgat joined the Honourable Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Sri Lanka Minister for Sports, at Galle Face Green in Colombo on 24th March to formally launch the sale of tickets for the ICC World Twenty20 2012, which takes place between 18 September and 7 October 2012.

The men’s tournament will be played at the same three grounds – Hambantota, Pallekelle and Premadasa in Colombo – which successfully staged the group and knock out matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, an event universally acclaimed as one of the best in history. The women’s group matches will be staged at the beautiful ground in Galle.

A spectacular launch was watched by thousands tonight (24 March) and was a fitting start for the first ICC World Twenty20 tournament that Asia will host.

Mr Lorgat said at the launch event: “This is the first ICC World Twenty20 tournament to be held in Asia and follows the previous three successful editions staged in South Africa (2007), England (2009) and the Caribbean (2010).

“Those events have shown the enormous passion and excitement for nation versus nation cricket and I know that this ICC WT20 tournament in Sri Lanka will be no exception.

“I am certain that the tickets will be snapped up quickly as everyone wants to enjoy this action packed cricket. I know from my time during the World Cup that the Sri Lankan public are passionate supporters of cricket – not only for their own team but also for the other teams which played here.

“I am confident that the expertise and experience gained during the ICC Cricket World Cup will help local organisers to deliver another successful event. In advance I wish to thank them, the Sri Lankan Government and the people of Sri Lanka for their support of the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 2012. I wish everyone great success.”

Upali Dharmadasa, the president of Sri Lanka Cricket, added: “My executive committee and I, as the President of Sri Lanka Cricket, are honoured to hold the reigns of Sri Lanka Cricket when this historic tournament is played on Sri Lankan soil. I thank the Honourable Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage for his unstinted support for all the sports in Sri Lanka in general and for cricket in particular.

“T20 cricket is exciting, intense and vibrant from the beginning. To choose Sri Lanka as the destination for this global event is a fitting tribute to our country which has a proud cricketing history that reached its pinnacle in 1996 when we won the World Cup. Since then we have remained a dominant force in world cricket.

“This tournament will attract new kind of spectator at a time when Sri Lanka is fast becoming an attractive destination for both visitors and investors. The ICC World T20 2012 is a perfect platform to showcase everything our country has to offer. I encourage cricket fans worldwide to come here for diversity which no country can offer and exciting cricket and also to experience the warmth and hospitality which is second to none. As matches have been scheduled in Hambantota, Kandy, Galle and Colombo, all spectators will have a chance to see the country.”

Sri Lanka vice-captain Angelo Mathews and Sri Lankan women’s player Shashikala Siriwardena also attended the festivities and conducted the draw in which 800 tickets were won by lucky fans. Mathews said: “It is wonderful to have the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. It shows that the ICC has placed its faith in us. I want to welcome all cricket fans to enjoy the cricket and of course the hospitality of Sri Lanka.”

Siriwardena added: “I am very happy that the women’s tournament has been given a lot of prominence in the event and I urge people to come along and support us and the other women’s teams in Galle.”

Tickets will go on sale to the Sri Lankan public from 9am (Sri Lanka time) on Monday, 26 March 2012 - with a special window of four days exclusively for Sri Lankan fans. Tickets will be available at box offices located in Colombo, Kandy and Hambantota and at selected MONEYGRAM outlets in Bank of Ceylon branches. It is mandatory for those purchasing tickets to have their NIC or a valid Passport on hand.

A maximum of four tickets can be purchased by each person for the super eights, semi-finals and finals, and a maximum of six tickets per person for the rest of the matches. Online booking of tickets will be available by logging onto www.icc-cricket.com, and buyers must produce a receipt confirming their purchase to redeem their match ticket at the box office. Ticket collection will take place from 1 August 2012.

Tickets represent excellent value with prices starting at as little as US $0.25 for the single group games and the final itself has tickets ranging from only US $2.50 up to just US $45.

Attendance at the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 during the group stages in Galle will be free of charge. The women’s semi-finals and final will be played on the same day on the same ground as the men’s and will be covered by the same ticket. The global sale of tickets will go live on Friday, 30 March at 9am GMT with a second phase of tickets becoming available on 1 August 2012.
