Vettori had previously announced he was taking a break from limited overs cricket but the lure of another global tournament has proved hard to resist.
New Zealand take on Bangladesh and Pakistan in their group and will name a provisional squad on 18th July.
"Dan was the number one ranked Twenty20 bowler in 2009 and is widely regarded as one of the best Twenty20 exponents in world cricket," New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Chief Exexcutive David White said.
"His availability is a real boost for the BLACKCAPS with his style of bowling well suited to conditions in Sri Lanka."
Vettori has played 28 T20 Internationals for his country, taking 35 wickets and bowling with an economy rate of 5.36. He has played two of those games in Sri Lanka, taking two wickets with an economy rate of 5.42.
National Selection Manager Kim Littlejohn added: "Twenty20 is a format Dan enjoys and the opportunity to be part of a team which competes at a world event is enticing for him.
"He has been encouraged by his team mates, coaching staff and others at NZC and we are thrilled to have him in the mix. He will offer a lot to the side."
